QCSA Senior Women’s Div.1 Wrap-Up
Sat.9th May 2015 – {Rd.3}
In one of the closest seasons for quite some time there are five teams level in first place after 4 matches played - Rosewood, West End, Blackstone United, Westminster and Logan Metro, with North Pine Baptist and Raceview one game from the top position.
West End had a comfortable 4-1 home victory over Brisbane Valley, as did North Pine Baptist over their hosts, Salisbury Baptist, at Brittain Park.
Logan Metro’s home ground advantage helped it edge out Logan Uniting 2-1 in a thrilling game.
In local derbies, Raceview surprised with an away win against ladder leaders, Rosewood United 2-0. Similarly, Blackstone United had an excellent result in defeating Westminster Warriors 3-1 at home.

Salisbury 1 vs North Pine Baptist 4 (H/T: 1-1)

In the opening 20 minutes both teams displayed exciting and positive football with excellent passing and wing play. From the opening minute, Salisbury had an early opportunity with a flying Hollee Carmody leaving the North Pine defenders in her wake as she unleashed a powerful low shot, but, was denied by a spreadeagled Katrina Capps.
The ball was whisked up the other end of the park with some exquisite passing before Emma Podlich showed a turn of speed and a low shot was denied by an excellent save from Kate Schultz.
A minute later, there’s action at the other end again, with Sally Worland being denied a certain goal by the courageous goal-keeping by Katrina Capps. It’s these who would figure once again in the 10th minute. After a goal-mouth scramble, which saw Capps parry a close-range shot, Sally Worland deservedly puts the home team Salisbury in front, to the joy of her teammates and their supporters, after unleashing a thunderbolt from just inside the box.
The Salisbury girls were playing on a high and defended well through Dannielle Steele, Sofie Moore and Taneisha Deen-Fisher, and were well marshalled by the experienced, Tracy Carmody at the back, and had g/k Kate Schultz to thank for some excellent saves. The left flank of Holly O-Connor and Hollee Carmody were in complete control. Ilone and Macy Hicks were dangerous through the middle whist Sally Worland was everywhere in attack with selfless running and cracking shots at goal.
The complexion of the game took a complete reverse as the more experienced North Pine Baptist team equalised in the 20th minute through Megan O’Bree after some excellent lead-up play by Sigourney Brown-Rothwell, Rhonda Crump and Emma Podlich. With the score at 1-1 the visitors turned up the heat and played as a strong and collective bunch, whilst Salisbury Baptist somehow lost their shape, and consequently their way, even though they put in a strong effort.
North Pine’s more settled structure allowed them to play simple football with Emma Podlich always at the top of the forward line. She received great support from the engine room, in the middle of the park, with Rhonda Crump and Sigourney Brown-Rothwell. Central defenders, Klarissa Jackson and Roslyn Miller, along with the outstanding goal-keeping of Katrina Capps, provided the defensive cover. Each of the other girls from North Pine played on the flanks and worked hard to maintain North Pine’s passing game and close control.
After a 1-1 scoreline at halftime, even though North Pine dominated the last 20 minutes of this half, they turned on champagne football after the break and showed why they were a force last year. Three goals in 8 minutes was enough to take them to victory, with goals to Kirsty Jackson in the 56th minute, Rhonda Crump in the 62nd minute & Sigourney Brown-Rothwell in the 64th minute.
Young referee, Justin Horsey, was outstanding and was ably assisted by two non-qualified linesmen, David and Jason.
In next week’s games, North Pine Baptist will host a wounded Rosewood United after their first loss for the season, and Salisbury Baptist head out to the Brisbane Valley with both teams looking to collecting their first points of the season.
QCSA Senior Men’s Div.1 Wrap-Up

St Pauls maintained their unbeaten run with a convincing 4-1 away win over Mansfield Eagles.
Brisbane Athletic got amongst the goals with a 5-2 win over Whitehill.
Blackstone United welcomed an inconsistent Logan Metro squad and triumphed with an emphatic 4-2 win.
North Pine Baptist maintained their good form with a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Latin Golden Boys.
Finally, in a pulsating contest, Sunnybank Saints came up against a red-hot Westminster team and went down 1-2.
The remaining two games were cliff-hangers as St Pauls outlasted Bris Athletic 2 – 1, whilst Westminster Warriors just got home from the Latin Golden Boys, also 2 – 1.
After 4 matches, St Pauls remain undefeated and head the table on 12 points, with Sunnybank Saints, North Pine Baptist and Westminster Warriors making up the top four a game behind. Blackstone United, Brisbane Athletic and Mansfield Eagles are a further game back but have the talent to threaten the top four in coming weeks.

Mansfield Eagles 1 vs St Pauls 4 (H/T: 1-3)

Home team Mansfield Eagles jumped out of the blocks with two chances in the opening couple of minutes. A corner from Joshua Collins bounced along the cross bar in a near miss before Dan Thomas crossed from the other wing after a free kick and a couple of tall Mansfield Eagles players just failed to convert.
Division 1 leaders, St Pauls, finally got their act together and after withstanding an early onslaught from the home team, hit the lead in the 6th minute with a great counter-attack. Chris Gatto received the ball out wide on the right. He cut inside the defender and produced a dangerous cross which eluded a number of defenders after Paul Eigl dummied the ball, including the g/k, and snuck in at the far post.
Both teams played enterprising, free-flowing football with St Paul’s captain, Daniel Gatto and his brother Chris, Will Shen and Paul Eigl featuring in most attacking forays, whereas Daniel Thomas orchestrated the Eagles’ attacks with assistance from Jose and Elmer Avilez.
In the 18th minute, St Pauls get onto the score-sheet again, even though the chances were being spurned at each end. Chris Gatto put Paul Eigl through the defensive line. He mesmerised the defenders before cutting back to find Daniel Gatto on the penalty spot who coolly placed the ball into the net. With the score 2-0, St Pauls went on a rampage and completely dominated the next 15 minutes with wonderful passing and running off the ball, but unfortunately couldn’t penetrate with outstanding goal-keeping from Phillip Galea and stout defending from Daniel Carter.
The game came back to life when a tussle between Kevin Wong and Jose Avilez resulted in a penalty awarded to Mansfield Eagles by James Peall in the 30th minute . Eagles’ captain/coach Daniel Thomas stepped up and smashed the ball past the enigmatic Daniel Wang, deputising for the no.1 shot-stopper, Nick Chin, and the lead was cut to 2-1.
After a couple of unsuccessful raids by the visitors, the two goal buffer is restored after a classical striker’s finish from Chris Gatto. After receiving the ball 30 metres from goal, Gatto turned his defender and unleashed a powerful thunderbolt that the Mansfield G/k could only watch as it smashed into the top corner.
In the final five minutes of the first half, the Eagles’ boys showed great character to keep pushing forward and Ben Wasley’s pace created havoc in St Pauls defensive half. He was denied by G/k Daniel Wang’s interception on a couple of occasions and another clearance by the besieged defenders. The half-time whistle couldn’t come faster and was welcomed by the St Pauls team but they had a two goal cushion 3-1 in the first stanza.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Mansfield Eagles continued their assault on the visitor’s goal with shots from Joshua Collins and William Sidney just sailing over the bar. But all this attacking endeavour came to no avail as St Paul’s scored their 4th goal, with a simple header by an unmarked Daniel Gatto at the back post, from a corner on the left wing, and all but put the game out of the Eagles’ reach.
Overall, St Paul’s quality team roster (minus experienced midfielder Wesley Hodson for this match), and coach, Dale O’Connell’s wise usage of the interchanges, has them as the early pace-setters and benchmark for the other eleven Division 1 teams. On the other hand, Mansfield Eagles are stepping up to Division 1 and making good strides, and eyeing a top 4 finish at season’s end.
Credit must goes to both teams for playing the game in the right spirit with James Peall and his assistants, Ivan and Lachlan, doing a solid job to maintain the flow of the game.
Both teams will have tough games next week as Mansfield Eagles head to Redbank Plains to play the exciting Westminster Warriors, whilst St Pauls head up the Bruce Highway to play the in-form North Pine Baptist team.
